The Medical Library supports the goals and vision of the Shady Grove Adventist Hospital by providing excellent customer service and useful resources. The Medical Library is committed to excellence in providing timely, relevant, accurate and accessible information to the medical and nursing staffs, administrators and managers, allied health professional staff, students, patients and their families. The library serves its patrons by planning, developing and administering the library's resources effectively in order to best serve the information and educational needs of its users.

The library is open Monday - Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and Friday 3:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
To gain entrance at other times, physicians may use their id badges. If a clinical staff person has an emergency information request outside of these hours, they may gain access to the library by contacting security.

The library is located on the 2nd floor, between 2D and 2C.  Use the main entrance elevators by the water wall, and, when you come off the elevators on the 2nd floor, you will be facing the Medical Library.

The library is staffed by one full-time professional librarian and two volunteers.

The Library is open to all employees and affiliated physicians of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. The general public is welcome to use the library's collection when the librarian is present, but only hospital staff may borrow material. In the case of hospital staff wishing to use the library's services for purposes other than direct patient care (i.e. educational purposes) the librarian will exercise his discretion to provide the information. Since priorities are given to patient care requests, it will depend on whether the librarian has sufficient time to process non-patient care requests.

The Medical Library provides access to both print and online resources, encompasing every area of medical speciality, clinical nursing, evidence-based medicine, and allied health sciences.  Through OvidMD, ClinicalKey, NursingConsult, CINAHL, the R2 Digital Library, and StatRef, you have access to over 500 online journals and 1,000 online books.  Print resources include over 1,700 books in the medical, nursing, and allied health fields, as well as reference and consumer health collections, videos, and educational cd-roms.  Online resources include access to over 400 online journals and books, and three core databases: Medline, Cinahl, and the Cochrane Collection.  In addition to these online resources, the Medical Library also provides access to customizable patient handouts, drug guides, current medical news, over 1,000 clinical practice guidelines, and CME.  Online resources are available 24/7 without an id/password from any hospital computer, and from outside the hospital with an id/password.  Only staff and affiliated physician may request an id/password by contacting the Medical Librarian at 240.826.6101 or jogora@ahm.com.

The library has four computer terminals.  All four computers can be used for research, email, and to use the Microsoft Office Suite.  The Library also has a photocopier that will print, copy, and fax documents (local fax only).  You may use the copier to photocopy patient care related material from library books and journals (copyright restrictions apply). There is no charge to make a photocopy.

If you are interested in individual or group training to learn how to use the Medical Library's print and online resources, including how to navigate Medline, Cinahl, online journal & book collections using Ovid, MDConsult, or StatRef, please contact Jane Ogora, Lead Librarian, at 240.826.6101 or jogora@ahm.com to set up an appointment.  Presentations can be powerpoint and/or hands-on demonstrations.
